Escapes

When it all gets too much - what do we do?

And when it all gets too much for us... we look for ways to take our mind off it, let off steam, release the pressure... to relax... to feel better... to ‘escape’.

Some of the ways we escape are to;

  • Run away - from home, work, people, situations.
  • Sleep - perhaps even wishing we could wake up when it’s all over!
  • Vent
  • Eat
  • Drink
  • Do drugs
  • Have sex
  • Shop
  • Work out
  • Over work
  • Pray
  • Change jobs
  • Change partners

And the ultimate no-turning-back escape;

  • Suicide.

When we turn our attention and energy to ‘escapes’ to deal with our discomfort we avoid dealing with the reality that’s creating the discomfort. The ‘escapes’ makes us feel better in the short-term.

If they work for us, they may become ‘patterns’ and sometimes ‘addictions’ which can make us feel much worse in the longer-term.

This Competition Culture plays out in predictable ways on a daily basis, reflecting and revealing comparison and hierarchy, domination and submission, in;

  • The behaviours of competition - what we do, and
  • The language of competition - what we say.
